Act I: The New Kid Raises His Voice
D2D Goes Beyond the “Cool Demo”
If last week were a scene, it’d open on Viasat standing in a spotlight, leaning into the mic, and saying, “We just sent SMS via satellite to an Android in Mexico.” On October 16 they officially unveiled that milestone. That may not sound like “internet from orbit for everyone,” but it’s exactly where you start when you want your service to matter, not just dazzle. By making the jump from concept to usable messaging, they’re bridging ambition and utility.
Why is that important? Because in the world of satellite direct‑to‑device, everybody’s chasing a dream: full broadband on your phone, anywhere, anytime. But dreams often die where power constraints, spectrum rules, handset variability, regulatory oversight, and user expectations intersect. If you can deliver reliable texts first, then perhaps you can build to real voice, data, and app traffic next. Viasat is moving cautiously but with intent, using the low‑hanging fruit (messaging) to seed trust, integration, and regulatory goodwill.
