Starlink goes dark

The mighty have stumbled, and the industry didn’t miss a beat.

When SpaceX’s Starlink unexpectedly went dark for roughly 2.5 hours the LEO titan handed its competitors a gift-wrapped PR opportunity no press team could have scripted better.

The outage, which hit tens of thousands globally, including remote users in Australia and even military positions in Ukraine, was due to a software configuration mishap, a fancy way of saying someone pushed the wrong button and the whole sky blinked.

As customers panicked and tweets flew, the VSAT and hybrid comms crowd perked up like hyenas at a buffet. Within hours, whispers turned to open calls for diversified connectivity. Maritime operators and energy firms suddenly remembered their dusty 4G failover boxes, C-band terminals, and that one Ka-band link they hadn’t unplugged yet.

Nothing like an outage to make “backup connectivity” sound sexy again.

Even terrestrial cellular providers got in on the fun. Several 4G/5G integrators reminded clients that resilient comms architecture isn’t just a PowerPoint slide. It’s now gospel. Dual WAN. SD-WAN. LTE fallback. Satellite-satellite redundancy. All the acronyms Starlink made feel outdated got a resurgence, like ‘80s fashion but with higher throughput.

The real lesson? In the connectivity world, betting on a single orbit, or single vendor, is like showing up to a sword fight with a battery-powered lightsaber. Cool until it dies.
