Forget cute stories about Eurocrats baffled by bananas. The Commission’s next act? Smashing 14 budget lines into one €589 billion cash lump, Hercules-style megafund. Space, defense, research, everything in one pot. Because juggling peanuts wasn’t giving them enough leverage.
Remember IRIS², that plucky satellite plan? Once a modest €6 billion idea, it matured like a fine wine into a €10–12 billion behemoth. Germany complained. Brussels shrugged, pulled out its blank check, and said: “Yes, we’ll just dip into the megafund.” Budget categories? Who needs ‘em.
Now Horizon Europe wants another €175 billion, double the size. Defense and space will get €131 billion, because nothing spells “strategic autonomy” like satellites that no one controls except Brussels. Fund consolidation? One portal for all, that’s simplicity… and central control. Nations needn’t apply.
Meanwhile, expect EU-wide registers tracking pets, pacifiers, and condom dimensions, presumably to map future rebellions. Now every citizen’s belongings get logged. Because autonomy is so 20th century. Compliance is the new black.
So, what’s next? The Commission becomes the de facto continental commander. IRIS² for defense, strategic communication, global reach, branded not as military tech, but “connectivity.” National parliaments become quaint relics. Budget crunch? Not when you’ve got Brussels’ endless pile of euros. And who pays? Germany and corporate taxes, but only if Berlin says okay. Spoiler: Berlin says no.
In short: Brussels wants to be the government, not manage a budget. And their toolset is built, €2 trillion budget, satellite armies, petty data surveillance, regulatory tangents.
The only question now: can anyone remember what sovereignty looked like?
