Somewhere between the war effort and the ruble’s slow-motion implosion, Russia has decided it’s time to clutter low Earth orbit with its very own satellite internet constellation. The logic is as elegant as a Cold War rerun: if the Americans have it, and the Chinese are building it, then by all that is bureaucratically sacred, Russia must have one too. Enter the newest cosmic daydream, an “analogue” to Starlink, not to be confused with a competitor, because that would imply parity.

Dmitry Bakanov, who now chairs Roscosmos and seems eager to shake the mothballs off Russia’s space ambitions, has promised a constellation at “rapid pace.” No timeline. No specs. Just vibes and some previously launched “test vehicles” that have been “inspected,” which sounds a lot like “we saw they were still up there.” That’s about as reassuring as inspecting a tank by watching it rust in a field. The chosen vessel for this voyage into spacefaring nostalgia? A company named Bureau 1440, which sounds less like a tech pioneer and more like something you’d find on a Cold War personnel file.

Of course, none of this is really about providing broadband to remote Siberian villages that still use outhouses and diesel generators. It’s a sovereignty play. The Ukraine conflict revealed that Starlink is more than a Silicon Valley side project; it’s now a battlefield utility. And in classic fashion, Russia’s strategic answer is to try replicating the system, in functionality and in sheer orbital congestion.

So we get all the posturing of a modern space race without the supply chain, launch capacity, or functional roadmap. Roscosmos still hasn’t explained how they’ll mass-manufacture satellites under sanctions, where they’ll find enough functioning rockets for deployment, or who will even be allowed to use this alleged network. Civilian use? Military-only? Export to “friendly” regimes with authoritarian leanings? The vague posturing continues, while the actual engineering takes a back seat to speeches about youth innovation and shaking off “inertia,” as if the problem is motivation and not microchips.

There’s something deeply Russian about answering a logistical and technological arms race with vibes and delayed PowerPoints. Starlink works because SpaceX has a reusable launch system, integrated production, and an industrial cadence that Russia hasn’t touched since the Soviet days, and even then only on Tuesdays when vodka shipments were delayed.

Sure, Russia can put objects in space. But maintaining a networked constellation, optimizing latency, managing spectrum, navigating orbital regulations, and keeping it all online? That requires a functional industrial ecosystem, not just patriotic resolve and a couple of dusty Proton rockets. And that’s before we even get to orbital debris, frequency conflict, or the inconvenient fact that many of the needed satellite components are sanctioned six ways from Sunday.

Still, the underlying message is crystal clear: Russia doesn’t want to be dependent on foreign space infrastructure in a world where the sky is increasingly militarized and monetized. It’s a flag-planting operation with antenna arrays. Will it work? Probably not well. Will it happen? Probably, to some stunted degree. But in the grand tradition of state-driven prestige projects, it doesn’t have to succeed to be declared a triumph. It just needs a name, a press conference, and maybe a promotional video with classical music and dramatic cutaways to launch pads.

In the meantime, expect more announcements, more unlaunched hardware, and more insistence that this constellation is “sovereign” and “strategic.” And if it ever makes it beyond prototype stage, get ready for global debates on orbital traffic management, because what the planet really needs is one more batch of blinking lights circling the Earth, shouting into the void.
